Our strategic work regarding alcohol and other drugs is aiming towards all levels of society. We carry out our advocating work through lobbying, campaigns and grass-root actions.

Alcohol is the worst drug
Alcohol is the far most spread drug in Sweden as in all other countries. Alcohol is without competition the drug that causes the worst damage to society.

It’s really quite simple: The amount of alcohol related harm in a society depends on the amount of alcohol consumed. Scientific evidence shows that if the consumption is doubled, the level of alcohol related harm raises four times. And if the average consumption increases, the number of heavy drinkers and dependent people will also increase.

The same goes for all kinds of drugs. The more drugs available, the more damage to society. You cannot divide alcohol abuse from other forms of drug abuse. They go hand in hand. That is why it is important that narcotic drugs are kept illegal. A legalisation and decriminalisation will only lead to more drug abuse.

The goal of our advocacy for a better drug policy is to raise the awareness of politicians and policy makers on all levels.

The goals of the alcohol and drug policy work of IOGT-NTO:

• Stopping the increasing of the total consumption of alcohol
• Raising the average age of starting to use alcohol
• Reducing the use of narcotic drugs
• Reducing the number of young people who try narcotic drugs
